This year marks 90 years of Social Security — a program that has transformed retirement in America.
From its creation during the Great Depression to its role today, Social Security has been a cornerstone of financial stability for millions. But its future is at risk without decisive action.
We here at the National Organization of Retired Americans take great pride in promoting advocacy for Social Security. Let’s explore this important program’s origins and discuss how we can protect it. Together, we can ensure it remains a financial cornerstone for future generations of retirees.
90 Years of Social Security: History, Challenges, and Hope
When President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935, the mission was clear: ensure older Americans could retire with dignity and security. Funded through payroll taxes, it was designed as a reliable safety net for retirees, the disabled, and surviving family members.
For today’s seniors, Social Security remains far more than just a monthly check to cover necessities like housing, food, and healthcare. It also helps retirees enjoy the well-earned luxuries that make for a happy and fulfilling lifestyle. This can include traveling to see family, joining community activities, or simply having peace of mind about unexpected expenses.
Unfortunately, poor policy management over the decades has left the program vulnerable. Policymakers have eroded the original “Trust Fund” model. Intended to protect retirement savings, it’s now been abandoned, and surplus funds have been used for unrelated spending.
Additionally, the cap on taxable earnings means some of the wealthiest Americans contribute proportionally less, putting added strain on the system. Without reform, the stability of Social Security is at risk.
We believe this program must be safeguarded — not just for today’s retirees, but for future generations who deserve the same financial foundation in retirement. Restoring the Trust Fund model and protecting every dollar collected for retirement benefits is essential.
