Medicare is a program that provides free healthcare to seniors who are enrolled in Social Security. While Medicare Part A, the part that covers healthcare such as hospital stays and other emergency services, is typically free, seniors have to cover the costs of Medicare Part B. This aspect of Medicare covers outpatient care as well as diagnostic services. And over the years, Medicare Part B costs have risen, leaving retirees struggling even as they receive cost-of-living adjustments.
According to The Motley Fool, past Social Security COLAs have nearly been “wiped out” by Medicare premium increases. While Medicare increases will never outpace COLAs, they could keep seniors from using hose funds for other things, such as travel or essential items like groceries.
One solution? A yearly COLA could preempt Medicare premium increases. The COLA Act of 2021 would ensure that seniors receive a benefits increase every year, even if their Medicare costs go up. NORA is working to pass this legislation. We’re also calling on Congress to pay seniors back for years of missed COLAs. Some seniors could stand to receive thousands in unpaid benefits.
