As October draws near, many seniors anticipate an official announcement from the Social Security Administration. The announcement of exactly what the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for the next year will be can be either an encouragement or a letdown to our nation’s retirees. Some years, no COLA at all is a crushing blow. However, other years, COLAs of several percent can bring needed relief in the face of rising inflation. At NORA, we believe that retirees should see an increase every single year. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to pass The COLA Act of 2021: to show that they’re putting seniors first.
The COLA Act of 2021 Would Reward Hardworking Seniors
Currently, the way COLAs are rolled out actually hurts Social Security beneficiaries. For instance, in 2021, inflation has risen dramatically. The rising prices of goods and services across the country have made it harder for seniors to afford what they need. And when the adjustment from the Social Security Administration isn’t effective until 2022, it means that seniors have had to struggle to get by all year.
Retirees have worked hard for their benefits. Unfortunately, politicians regularly push seniors aside to prioritize their own pet projects. It’s time to make your voice heard in Washington. We’re calling on all seniors to tell Congress they want to see The COLA Act of 2021 passed.
And NORA’s calling on Congress to take this bill one step further. We’ve calculated that seniors are owed as much as $10,970 in unpaid benefits due to missing COLAs. That’s thousands of dollars that seniors earned that the government is sitting on. Do you agrees seniors should receive all that they’re due?
