It’s like a financial horror story of the worst kind, just in time for Halloween.
Sadly, this grim situation is no product of fiction. It’s a very possible reality that could impact half a million social security beneficiaries in San Diego according to Jonathan Horn at ABC News San Diego.
The potential of a debt default puts these individuals’ benefits in jeopardy, and the impact may not stop there. For those who worked their whole lives to pay into this fund, seeing their payments halted – even temporarily – would yield the highest form of frustration. For many who depend on these benefits to live, it could mean a big dip in their living standards.
Lynn Reaser from Point Loma Nazarene UniversityEven notes that “Social Security tax payments alone” won’t cover this cost, leaving beneficiaries wondering whether the government will make the necessary changes to give them what they’re owed.
While Congress may be kicking the can down the road until December, it’s unacceptable seniors should have to worry now – or then – about their benefits being delayed.
Seniors have worked hard for Social Security, and at NORA, we work hard to make sure they’re a priority no matter the economic circumstances – if you’d like to help us make sure seniors get the full value of their payments, uninterrupted, sign our petition calling for the passage of The COLA Act of 2021 then follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
