While we’re taught that Social Security is there for all Americans, this isn’t the case for some workers.
Specifically, federal employees have been impacted by The Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset. These acts impact the retirement savings of those who receive annuities from government work — but who also worked in private sector positions and paid into Social Security.
As things stand now, they could be missing out on money. Even their spouse or widow could miss out as a result. As we’ve discussed, these issues also impact certain state workers in the public sector, such as teachers.
A bill to fix things at the federal level had bipartisan support before, but failed to pass. Now it’s being reintroduced, alongside efforts to revamp hiring at the federal level.
