As early as April, 2020, the World Health Organization warned “older people face significant risk of developing severe illness” from COVID-19. Since then we have learned that senior citizens face the greatest challenges in combating the illness. Yet, many seniors fear COVID-19 vaccination due to potential side effects. For those senior citizens wary of vaccination, good news has arrived!

Seniors Experience Fewer Side Effects

A recent study from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has found that senior citizens are “far less likely to develop side effects” than younger people following COVID-19 vaccination.

In fact, fewer than 4% in the 65 to 74 age group experienced negative side effects after receiving the vaccination. And that number dropped lower as age groups increased. The study included multiple vaccine brands, and the results were similar. That is, the older the patient, the less likelihood he or she had any adverse effects following vaccination.

With America’s seniors facing greater risk of severe illness and death, vaccination already made sense. Now, with evidence for lower risk of post-vaccination side effects, seniors have one less concern in receiving care.

What More Can Be Done?

At the National Organization of Retired Americans, we want all of America’s seniors to live their best lives. That includes health, well-being, and financial security. That is why we advocate for a guaranteed, Social Security cost-of-living-adjustment of 3%. This COLA should be retroactive to 2010. That way, seniors can be compensated for the unfair, low and missing COLAs they have endured for more than a decade. With additional costs in health care and related to COVID-19, it only makes sense.

If you agree, please sign our Benefit Reimbursement Petition to Congress. It only takes a minute, and it’s a great way for America’s seniors to make their voices heard!
