Social Security and Divorce: What You Need to Know

  • Post category:News

Many retirees hold misconceptions about Social Security and divorce. For instance, a recent survey showed that over half of adults believe that an ex-spouse impacts their benefits. That is not the case.

Others believe that they need to contact their ex-spouse for a signature to begin receiving benefits. This, also, is not the case.

A recent post on The Motley Fool explores a 7 myths regarding social security and divorce. You might also want to see our recent post regarding survivor benefits.

At NORA, we believe one of the best actions Congress can take to assist seniors is simply making cost-of-living-adjustments more reasonable. Recent Social Security COLAs are too low and don’t cover real cost of living increases for seniors.

That is why we advocate for the Guaranteed 3% COLA for Seniors Act. We also believe this 3% COLA should be made retroactive to 2010. Only this way will seniors receive fair compensation for the low and missing COLAs they have endured.
