As debates pick up again about Social Security policy, one idea is coming to the forefront.
Some people say that raising the Social Security full retirement age is the best move to make. They argue it would help sustain the program longer, and guarantee larger benefits for those who wait.
But others say this is a bad idea. For one, it functions as a benefit cut of sorts. It makes it so those who have a lower life expectancy won’t be able to earn as much in relation to what they paid in.
There’s also the fact that many people collect Social Security while working, using it to supplement low wages. If the full age is pushed up, those vulnerable individuals could be left with less than they need to survive.
Finally, it moves the goalpost on the retirement seniors have fairly earned. We need to protect retirement benefits in full — to help us in our cause, become a regular reader by following us on Facebook and Twitter.
