Will The Social Security Fairness Act Help Public Sector Workers?

Are Public Workers Being Shorted on Social Security?

We here at NORA believe Social Security should be there for everyone who has paid in. But are public sector workers being left out?

Some provisions at the federal level reduce benefits for these workers and their spouses. Teachers, police, firefighters, and more may be missing out. However, the Social Security Fairness Act could change this.

Now that it’s been signed into law, many public sector workers and their spouses can expect more money in retirement. Per NPR, about 4 percent of beneficiaries will see their retirement income impacted by this law. However, this move is also projected to accelerate Social Security’s insolvency by six months.

Public sector workers aren’t the only ones missing out. As we’ve reported, many other groups and demographics may be coming up short. This includes the spouses of contributors, the children of former beneficiaries, as well as former foster care youth.

We believe everyone is entitled to the benefits they’ve paid for over the years. Learn about our cause here to make fair yearly cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) a reality for all, then follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
