The Social Security Administration has seen a change in leadership in recent days. A Trump administration appointee is out after a two-year tenure, and a new acting commissioner is in charge.

President Biden has named Kilolo Kijakazi, former deputy commissioner for retirement and disability policy, as acting commissioner. According to a recent article from CNBC, some retirement advocates say this is a good move. However, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this new appointee will have. Changes that might impact beneficiaries are likely to come from congressional action.

At NORA, change needs to come to Social Security, and we wish the new leadership well. But we want to see action taken about low or nonexistent COLAs. Even though 2022’s COLA could be 6% or higher, recent low COLAs have left Social Security beneficiaries struggling to pay for what they need as prices have gone up. We’re asking Congress to act.
