Legislation has recently been reintroduced to provide Social Security credits for those who have stopped working in order to care for loved ones. Titled the Social Security Caregiver Credit Act, this bill would give caregivers who have left the workforce credits. These credits would equal about half the average national wage.

Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has reintroduced this bill, noting that many Connecticut residents would benefit from these credits. Those who stop working in order to care for loved ones who need daily assistance shouldn’t have to worry about the Social Security benefits they’ll receive in the future.
