Women and Social Security

Do women need to approach their Social Security benefits differently? According to a new report from The New York Times, the answer is yes.

Women, on average, live longer than men, they note. And for older women who are single, divorced, or widowed, it’s important to get the most out of Social Security. Of course, waiting to take benefits until full retirement age is a big part of maximizing your Social Security benefits. Divorced women can be eligible for spousal benefits without taking away from their ex’s monthly check. And widowed women can claim survivor benefits that will equal the full amount that their late spouses would have received.

All older Americans should receive everything they deserve from Social Security. NORA is working hard to make that happen by asking Congress to guarantee cost-of-living adjustments of 3% or higher each year. But we need the help of people like you. Will you sign our online petition today? Adding your name will help us show Congress how important this issue is – and that we have the support of the American people.
