The Social Security COLA Needs Restructuring

America’s seniors feel the economic pinch as much as anybody. In many cases, they feel it more. That is because the 1.3% Social Security COLA this year does not address real world cost increases. According to some analysts, the Social Security COLA needs restructuring.

Writing for the Concord Monitor, Kath Allen speaks from his own experience. Allen has seen nearly $4 in monthly Medicare increases. And that’s on top of an almost $20 rise in supplemental health insurance premiums! So where did that leave his Social Security benefit? Allen says, “I entered January 2021 with a negative $7 from my COLA.”

His situation is not unusual.

NORA finds this increased strain on America’s seniors unacceptable. That is why we established our nationwide campaign. We advocate for legislation to provide a permanent 3% Social Security COLA increase for all beneficiaries.

This 3% Social Security COLA must be made retroactive to 2010. Only this way will America’s seniors be compensated for the disgracefully low COLAs of the past decade.

If you agree, the moment to make your voice heard has arrived! Don’t hope and wait for legislators to act on their own. Sign our petition to Congress for a fair and permanent COLA for America’s retirees now!
