Social Security benefits are a complex matter. This is especially true in relationships.

People who join together in one household may share retirement income just like they share a regular income. But what happens when one passes away? Are you required to return their Social Security benefits?

Losing someone can result in a lot of emotional strain, which can further complicate matters relating to retirement benefits for the deceased. As explained here by Tracey Porpora by way of SILive, you do need to return any benefits that came after their passing.

Some people have gotten in trouble for claiming a late relative’s benefits. You must report a late spouse’s death to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Sometimes benefits can be sent again by mistake, and must still be returned.

While you can’t collect a late spouse’s benefits, you may be eligible for Social Security Survivors benefits.
