For most of us, our Social Security number is something we’ve used since birth or at the very least for all of our adult lives.
While some have it memorized by heart because they use it often, others carry it around or keep it stored so they don’t forget it in case they need it. But what about changing it?
Though this type of government-issued data point seems permanent, it is possible to change it. The SSA allows this if a person’s current number puts them at harm because of identity theft or other similar concerns. Doing so requires specific forms and paperwork, but the process is worth it for some people.
We all have a Social Security number — and if you’re getting Social Security benefits or you’re interested in this topic, be sure to follow NORA on Facebook and Twitter so you always know what’s going on with the program.
