It’s been well documented that the Social Security Administration (SSA) has fallen short in the area of customer service.

We at NORA have covered a variety of stories on this topic. From in-person wait times so long that safety measures had to be implemented to errors that saw living people pronounced dead, plenty of problems have arisen.

Why has the SSA struggled so much lately? In a recent response about their issues, a spokesperson noted that staffing shortages are the cause of the problem. They said their staff levels are the lowest in 25 years, and that more funding is needed to fix the issue.

Could a funding boost help Social Security recipients get the help they need? Or does this fail to address the real problem? Should the whole system be revamped?
