As we’ve covered, Social Security overpayment problems have been an issue for years.

The latest story on this topic sees a window facing a repayment demand of $70,000 from the Social Security Administration (SSA). She’s worried she’ll have to sell her house to cover it.

The error was alleged to have happened when her husband received the money after being out of work for six months. She says after he returned to work, they called the SSA to question why money was still coming in. They were told he was entitled to it because he had leukemia.

Now she’s facing demands to pay it all back. Per a recent policy change, SSA benefits can be garnished up to 50 percent to cover repayments. This is down from the original 100 percent policy from a few months ago. Just over a year ago, the number was capped at 10 percent.
