Will West Virginia Eliminate Taxes on Social Security?

West Virginia has eliminated taxes on Social Security for lower-income earners. This goes for single filers who make under $50,000 annually, and joint filers who make under $100,000.

But as one of the only 12 states that still taxes Social Security at all, West Virginia may be closer to moving into the majority and eliminating this tax entirely.

The state’s plan would phase out the tax for middle-class and high-income earners, and would go into effect over the course of 3 years. This would reduce the state’s revenue by $37 million, but the money could come back into the state’s economy through the seniors who would have the retirement funds they’ve fairly earned.
