We’ve all heard about the widespread use of AI over the past several years. But have you heard about the epidemic of AI voice scams?

As CBS News explains, these scams involve using AI to emulate a person’s voice. Scammers can call you, and modify their voice to sound like your loved ones. They may pretend to be in trouble, trying to trigger a fear response that makes you act fast, often to send money or private information.

Seniors in particular are often the targets of these scams. They’re targeted because they usually have more money saved up for scammers to go after, plus they likely have more family members the scammer can impersonate.

So how do you stay safe? Create a safety word or phrase. Keep this code between you and your loved ones, and make sure it isn’t anything that can be easily guessed or found online. This way, you can always verify whether the person on the line is who they claim to be.
