Social Security should provide for American seniors after years of hard work. However, for too long, seniors have waited for an annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) only to be disappointed. At NORA, we’re fighting for change.

Our Mission: Fair, Guaranteed COLAs for Social Security Beneficiaries

This year, rising inflation has led to estimates for COLAs that are some of the highest of the last 30 years. However, due to a COLA of only 1.3% for 2021, too many seniors are unable to afford the goods and services they need. Especially as the prices of things like medications and groceries rise, there’s cause for concern that our nation’s retirees haven’t received everything they’ve earned.

While a number of different changes to Social Security could help retirees, we’re focused on The Guaranteed 3% COLA for Seniors Act. Why? Because this piece of legislation would not only tie COLAs to a different index or boost benefits temporarily. Instead, this act would guarantee a 3% COLA each year. Over time, that would result in a significant increase and could help our nation’s seniors be ready for the next time inflation rises drastically.

Additionally, we’re calling on Congress to make this act retroactive to 2010. For many Social Security beneficiaries, this would result in a payout of thousands of dollars. To make up for years of low COLAs, Congress needs to make retirees a priority, and this would make a difference.
