Nontraditional Work Generates Cash for Seniors while Remaining Productive

Seniors often face two challenges in retirement. First, they may struggle with long-term, financial security. The other is finding all that “time off” isn’t always as exciting as you expected it to be. What if you could address both of these issues at once? You can improve your retirement security with gig work!

What is Gig Work?

Remember before starting your career, you might have worked a few “gigs”? Maybe you mowed a neighbor’s lawn as a kid or had a babysitting operation. It’s similar today. Gig work provides extra, part time income without being on a payroll.

Retirees entering gig work may follow their interests. A pet lover may choose to work with a dog-walking service. Or they can apply their years of expertise by performing accounting duties from home.

Other possibilities include handyman, graphic designer, and editor. With Covid-19 closing or limiting many office spaces, the choices grow every day. And many employers find they like the diligent work ethic of America’s seniors.

What Are the Gig Benefits for Seniors?

According a report from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, “workers who continue to work past 62 see a clear improvement in their retirement readiness by ages 67-68.”

While the study examined Americans late in their careers, the benefits expand well into retirement years. Part time work from home provides extra income. Just as importantly, it can add a sense of purpose and structure throughout the day.

Overall Retirement Security

At NORA, we believe that remaining engaged and active promotes well-being.

However, seniors should not be forced back into the workforce.

You earned your retirement, and you have the right to spend your time as you wish!

That is why we must pass legislation that provides a guaranteed, 3% annual cost-of-living-adjustment. And this COLA should be retroactive to 2010 to compensate retirees for low or nonexistent COLAS.

Please consider support The Guaranteed 3% COLA for Seniors Act by signing our Petition to Congress. It’s a quick, easy way to let your representatives know that they work for you.
