Man Sentenced for Social Security Fraud

Social Security fraud is serious business, and no one is immune to the consequences.

Michael Marcello was recently sentenced for providing false information in order to obtain $23,000 in undue Social Security funds.

While the sentence usually ranges from 8-14 months, the 71-year-old will instead receive a sentence of 4-10 months. The judge noted that the crimes were “outrageous,” though not sophisticated enough to fall under the guidelines of a higher sentence. His age and health were also called into question when discussing the sentence.

Marcello has previously served time for his role in the “Family Secrets” case.

Do you think this type of conviction means more fraud will be brought to light? How much could Social Security save by cracking down on fraud like this?
