Scammer Bought Social Security Numbers Online

We often hear about stolen Social Security numbers in data breaches — but ever wonder what happens to them?

Many end up on the dark web, where they command a high price. Dewan Anton Williams of Detroit is accused of buying stolen numbers and using them in a scheme that cost taxpayers millions.

The alleged operation saw him use the numbers to submit thousands of fraudulent Medicare applications. This allowed him to qualify for government cellphones, which he’d activate and sell for profit. Authorities reportedly found 150 new and pre-packaged units at his home.

The accounts have since been shut down, and the $11 million in payments has been recouped. Williams faces a maximum of 68 years in prison for charges of criminal enterprise, identity theft, using a computer to commit a crime, and welfare fraud.

Scammers are after Social Security numbers, especially during shopping season. Even kids are being targeted.
