It’s Halloween season, so we’re seeing spooky sights everywhere. But if there’s one thing that’s truly chilling, it’s being on the wrong end of Social Security errors.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a massive bureaucracy, so it’s only natural that mistakes would happen. But these errors assumed that some of those affected had passed on when it was fortunately not the case.

Unfortunately, many people are still struggling with errors like these and the havoc they unleashed on their lives. Here are a few frightful tales of Social Security errors involving individuals who were declared deceased.

Social Security Errors That Were Dead Wrong

More than just a misspelled name or an incorrect benefit amount, these Social Security errors are extreme. This is because they impacted people’s lives to a very serious degree.

This woman has dealt with the problem for over a decade. It impacted her ability to get financial aid in college, and has haunted her since then. She changed her legal name to try and correct the issue. However, she’s still having problems.

Take this Cleveland man, who knew something was wrong when his credit cards were declined. Despite building up good credit all his life, his transactions weren’t going through. After some digging, he discovered the SSA had listed him dead after he’d been in the hospital for two weeks.

This isn’t the only error of its kind. Multiple other people have been affected by the same problem. One man was declared dead when it was really his mother who had passed. This mix up came at the worst time, as he didn’t even get to mourn his loss. Another woman was fighting for her mother’s benefits, which were cut after she was incorrectly declared deceased. The fight to get them back has been a nightmare, with the daughter being hung up on by the SSA as she fought for her mother’s money.

In some instances, even people who were actually deceased have been affected by these errors through their family. Take this case, which saw a legally deceased person being sent benefits that had to be sent back by their relatives.

It just goes to show, some errors can be truly horrible to correct. We hope everyone affected by these and other similar problems can get their situations resolved promptly.
