Do This Before Claiming Social Security

As we’ve discussed here at NORA, knowing when to claim Social Security is critical for your retirement.

Some people decide to claim their benefits early so they can enjoy a longer retirement. Others work longer to take their benefits higher, while some choose the optimal age for a balance of both.

But age isn’t all that matters when it comes time to claim Social Security. The number of years you’ve worked plays a role as well. Benefits are calculated based on your 35 highest earning years, so if you’re already in the workforce and close to this milestone, make sure you don’t retire until you hit it.

Your total earnings will still be divided by 35, so it’s best to work this full span before retiring.
