Elijah Craine, 18, may not say much — but a lot is being said about a Social Security Administration (SSA) mix-up he was involved in.

His mother has been fighting hard to recover the young man’s Social Security benefits after he was mistakenly declared dead by the SSA.

The autistic young man needs his benefits, and his mother has been working hard to recover them. She herself suffers from cerebral palsy. The young man’s grandmother serves as a caretaker to both.

This mistake has been a nightmare for all involved. They’ve tried to correct the mistake. But constant calls have done nothing. Even multiple visits to offices haven’t helped.

These kinds of mistakes are all too common. They can be a headache to correct. What’s worse, they leave living people without the support they need. As one rep noted, the SSA receives millions of yearly death reports. However, less than a third of a percent are corrected.
