Which States Tax Social Security Benefits?

Does your state tax Social Security benefits? Only 12 of them do, and it’s nice to know the full list.

These states include: Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia.

A brighter way of looking at it is that 38 states don’t tax benefits. If you’re looking to relocate and save money in retirement, there are more “tax havens” than not.

This doesn’t mean you won’t face Federal taxes on your benefits. It should also be noted that living in a state where benefits are subject to taxes doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have to pay. It depends on your income and other factors.
